How to Have an Among Us Family Night

Looking for a creative family night for your teens or college age kids? Our family has been doing family nights for many years now, and we look for new or creative ideas. When one comes our way, we jump onto it. Our kids introduced us to a game called Among Us. Since our family was entertained playing Among Us on our phones together, we decided to try it out in real life (don’t worry, no one was harmed in the playing of this family night).

If you aren’t familiar with Among Us, this is a game you play on an electronic device with a group of people. One person is chosen to be the Imposter and the rest are Crew Mates. The Imposter’s job is to find the Crew Mates and kill them, without drawing suspicion to themself. Everyone performs different tasks while avoiding the Imposter. When a player finds a dead body, they call a meeting and everyone votes on the identity of the Imposter. The Crew Mates win if they complete all their tasks or discover the Imposter before everyone dies, and the Imposter wins if they kill everyone or are voted out during a meeting.

For the real life version, my son, Zach, and daughter, Emma, created a list of tasks for us (which was great because the tasks were mostly housework). First we were all given a playing card, which you kept to yourself. If you drew the King, you were the Imposter. Following that, we each drew 5 tasks out of a hat to complete. Then we dispersed to do our tasks, keeping an eye out for anyone suspicious.

If the Imposter touched one of us, we “died” and had to lay on the ground for thirty seconds. Then, we could get up and do our tasks as a “ghost”. We placed a picture with our name on it on the ground to show we had died, so we could get up and keep doing our tasks. You can find Among Us coloring pages here. Also, the Imposter has to wait 15 seconds after killing a Crew Mate before they can try to kill others. If a Crew Mate suspects someone is the Imposter but can’t find a body to report, they can call an emergency meeting. To make things easier for the Imposter, we only allowed one emergency meeting per game.

Meetings – “Dead Body Reported”

If a dead body is found, a Crew Mate can choose to call a meeting (this is different from the emergency meeting). This was done by ringing a bell (we also created a group text on our phones to communicate there was a meeting and to let each other know our tasks were completed). Then we would gather at the dining room table to debate the identity of the Imposter. If someone was a ghost, they could not speak at the meeting. Instead, they would just let everyone know that they were dead. All of us who were alive would vote on the identity of the Imposter. The Crew Mate with the most votes died and if that person was the Imposter, the game was over; if not, the game continued until another meeting was called or everyone finished their tasks.

Task Ideas

  1. Dust for 1 minute
  2. Draw a picture of your family
  3. Complete a maze
  4. Fold 5 pieces of clothing or towels
  5. Put 10 puzzle pieces together
  6. Clean 5 dishes
  7. Shoot 3 cups with a nerf gun
  8. Sweep for 1 minute
  9. Vacuum for 1 minute
  10. Put wires together (we made our own with string and construction paper and tied the same colored strings together)
  11. Pick up 5 leaves outside

These are some of the tasks that we had to perform during the game. You need enough for each of the participants to have 5 tasks to complete. The tasks were written (or type them) on pieces of paper with a location attached. A task could be done at more than one location, for example we had 2 locations for mazes, one in the basement and one in the garage and we had duplicates of each task as well.

Be creative and come up with tasks that fit where you live. Have fun! Please comment if you have any questions and I would be happy to answer.
