6 Tips for Organizing Clothes and Accessories

My room was messy a lot of the time growing up. Mostly there were clothes all over the place. When I was little, I loved getting clothes out and trying on different outfits, I just didn’t like putting them away when I was done. This carried over into my teen years. I would try to keep my room somewhat clean, but there was just something about clothes that made me hate hanging them up or putting them in drawers. I had clothes draped over a chair, lying in a pile on the floor, or hanging off the end of the bed. To this day I still dislike this task–just ask my family. I will delegate folding whenever possible or leave clothes in the dryer for a day or two.

While I am not as motivated in keeping my clothes and accessories organized, I have found these tips to be helpful, especially with limited storage space.

  1. Only keep clothes that you feel good in and wear consistently. Clothes I am drawn to are ones that are flattering (in color and fit) and comfortable. I could see a cute top in the store, but if I am uncomfortable in it, I will never wear it. Our current closet is not large, so I can only keep a certain amount of clothes in my closet. As a result, when my hangers are full, I go through my clothes and donate anything that I don’t need. Another thing I like to do in my closet is sort clothes by color. That may sound strange to you, but it helps me see what I have in that color and it blesses me!

2. I prefer using the velvet hangers. Clothes don’t fall off as easily, they look nicer than plastic, and they take up less room than bulky wood hangers. I bought mine at Walmart, or you can easily find some online. Also, it is handy to have a few hangers around specifically for skirts.

3. Utilize a scarf holder and have a designated place for belts. You don’t have to be fancy-I just use an extra hanger for some of my belts.

4. Baskets and boxes help contain hats and purses. I even have one for all my pairs of flip-flops that I keep under a bench in our bedroom. A hanging shoe organizer can come in handy as well. The one that is in our closet holds some of our shoes, which are mostly mine (okay only one pair isn’t).

5. To keep your drawers tidy, find a folding method that works for you. My drawers become messy easily, but I like how easy it is to find what I want and it creates more space when they are folded neatly. I haven’t completely grasped how Marie Kondo folds her t-shirts, but my method works for me and is similar. I fold the shirt length-wise in thirds keeping the sleeves tucked in, and then in thirds again-folding the top and bottom down (meeting in the middle) and I fold again.

6. Go through your clothes during spring and fall and donate or toss clothes that you don’t want or have worn out. Keep clothes that are not in the current season in an extra drawer in your dresser, containers, or in the closet. Because of a small closet and limited space in my dresser, I purchased some under-bed containers to put winter sweaters in during the summer, or when it is colder I can put shorts and other clothing that I don’t wear during the winter months.
