For many years I have dealt with problems with my complexion. When the teen years arrived, skin troubles arrived along with it. I had major issues with acne, which caused me to have low self-esteem because I was embarrassed by it. Sometimes I didn’t even want to go to school. I also would put on a lot of makeup to hide blemishes. I eventually went on some harsh medication to combat the pimples, but along with that came a whole new set of things to deal with. The medicine caused my face to get red and peel.
I looked forward to getting older, because I mistakenly believed that my face would improve. It did somewhat, but I had a weird combination of breakouts and dry flaky patches, which continued into my forties. To top it all off, I was diagnosed with rosacea in my late thirties. I never thought my skin looked nice. I would wish that I could have smooth, clear skin, but I didn’t think that would ever happen.

Then I began to do research into the products I was using, and I paid more attention to the food that was causing my skin problems. Discovering the impact of what I put into and on my body, has led me down the path of better wellness.
Tips For Healthier Skin

- Drink plenty of water. I definitely can tell the difference when I do not drink enough. My skin, especially my lips, is noticeably dryer. Our skin needs hydration from the inside.
- Skincare starts in your gut. It may seem like gut health and skin health have nothing to do with each other, but more research is being done around the connection between the two. Inflammation can get triggered when there is an imbalance of healthy bacteria within the gut. Different issues like rosacea, acne, eczema, and psoriasis can flare up. I take a probiotic and enzyme supplement, and pay attention to what foods that can cause issues as well.
- Collagen is a great supplement to take that is helpful for your skin. I was curious to try collagen and see what all the hype was. I have noticed healthier looking skin since I have been taking it. The kind I take supports the dermal layer after UV-induced skin damage and contains prebiotic fiber, which supports healthy skin by balancing the gut microbiome.
- What you use on your skin matter. Products with natural ingredients, and essential oils, such as frankincense, copaiba, and lavender, are significant in supporting healthy skin.
If you like DYI’s try out the following recipes:
Face Toner
- Add 8-10 drops of lavender essential oil to a 15 ml glass dropper bottle.
- Fill the rest of the way with with half natural aloe vera, and the other half with alcohol free witch hazel. I recommend alcohol free because the alcohol can irritate sensitive skin.
Face Serum
- Add 10-15 drops of frankincense essential oil to a 10 ml roller bottle.
- Fill the bottle the rest of the way with a carrier oil (a carrier oil is a fatty oil like coconut, jojoba, or grape seed oil, which are both good for all types of skin).

With the combination of drinking enough water, avoiding certain foods, taking care of my gut health, and using essential oils my skin is much healthier. Specifically, my face has not been this clear in a long time. Before, I never wanted to go out in public without my makeup, but now I have more confidence to do so.
